MISSOURI’S PLACES IN PERIL
THE STATEWIDE LIST OF ENDANGERED HISTORIC PLACES

Is there an endangered historic place in your neighborhood? The Missouri Alliance for Historic Preservation (Missouri Preservation) is currently accepting nominations to our list of endangered historic resources.  Instituted as a media campaign in 2000, this program is aimed at calling attention to endangered historic resources statewide.  Thes resources might be threatened by deterioration, lack of maintenance, insufficient funds, imminent demolition and/or inappropriate development.  Formerly known as our list of Most Endangerd Historic Places, the Program was renamed ‘Places in Peril’ in 2016.

Once historic resources are gone they are gone forever. By publicizing the plight of these places, we hope to build support toward the preservation of each selected property.  Our annual Places in Peril announcement will be held this year on August 25 at the National Building Arts Center in Sauget, Illinois, just across the Mississippi River from St. Louis. The Center’s holdings include remnants (and sometimes complete storefronts and interiors) from buildings lost over the years in the St. Louis area. It is a remarkable resource for those studying the history of building and materials. Their holdings include a vast array of cast iron, brick, terra cotta, architectural bronze and other metals, plaster, sgraffito and woodwork.
